Snow Blogging Idea!

While I was off of school for the two snow days I was thinking how blogging could be used in my classroom while both students and teachers were both off from school. I figured my students could view my blog and if we had it running they could view about their class assignments, homework, lecture notes, reading requirements, or exam info or grade questions since it is the end of the semester for high school students. This would be a great way to continue teaching without being there in person and students could comment to me or post work completed for credit. Instead of losing class time or trying to catch up when we got back to school we would be able to stay at the same pacing even if we are off of school for awhile. My issue would be what to do with the students who are not able to have computer access to the blogs? I'd also like to view if anybody has one a class blog for my viewing. Can anybody help me so I could see a good one up and running.

  1. Finding a good example of a class blog has been quite problematic. Richardson (2009) states, "very few people, educators or otherwise, have yet to experience the transformative potential of these new tools in terms of their own personal learning." (p.5- Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts, and Other Powerful WEb Tools for the Classroom). The result is that if we as educators haven't found them useful for our own learning, how can we pass along any notion that these tools have educational value. In our research we found that alot more research is needed on these tools, but I didn't feel I could research any of it until I actually had some experience with using them in education (the ITS semester 5 is my example of using blogs and tools with students). Interestingly in one study, students found blogs to be a great reflective tool to use with instructors but not with their peers.

  2. When we got back to class on Thursday and Friday after snow and teacher workdays, I found that the new material we did at the end of last week was a distant memory for the students. I can definitely see where blogging could help that - if they take the time to check it. Like you, I am struggling with what to do with students who don't have that access at home.
